A coordinated wave of Russian missiles and drones struck several Ukrainian cities overnight, resulting in at least seven deaths and widespread damage to residential infrastructure. The attack, described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as lasting “practically all night,” saw rescue operations continue into Saturday morning as emergency teams searched for survivors in the ruins of a Dnipro apartment building.
The death toll includes five individuals in Dnipro and two in the northern city of Chernihiv. Ukrainian authorities stated they successfully intercepted the majority of the more than 600 drones launched by Russian forces, in what appeared to be the largest aerial offensive in several days. According to BBC News, the strikes targeted a mix of energy facilities, industrial enterprises, and civilian housing.
In a significant escalation of its own, Ukraine launched a series of long-range drone strikes targeting industrial sites deep within the Russian Federation. Reports emerged of incidents in Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk, located approximately 1,000 miles from the border. While Russian officials claimed to have neutralized 127 drones across more than a dozen regions, local leaders in Yekaterinburg confirmed six injuries following a building strike.
The intensity of the Russian barrage also had regional repercussions. British Typhoon jets were scrambled from their base in Romania after drones were detected near the border. Although early reports suggested a potential engagement, the UK Ministry of Defence and NATO officials clarified that the jets did not enter Ukrainian airspace or shoot down any drones, as the threats were neutralized before breaching Romanian territory. Meanwhile, Bucharest is investigating the discovery of an unidentified object that fell on its side of the border.
On the front lines, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed via the Tass news agency that its forces have captured the village of Bochkove in the Kharkiv region. This strategic settlement sits near the northern border, where Russian troops have consistently attempted to push toward the city of Kharkiv. These claims have not been independently verified, and Ukrainian officials have remained silent on the village’s status.
Against the backdrop of the increased fighting, President Zelensky met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss military production and air defense. This second meeting in recent months signals Kyiv’s desire to strengthen ties with Gulf partners who are increasingly focused on drone warfare expertise. While diplomatic efforts continue, the conflict remains at a total impasse, with no clear path toward renewed peace negotiations.
